This is where I finally ended up staying for my week in Libreville. Which really helped out with the budgeting, as the accommodation in Libreville is expensive.
The community here was really nice, and they couldn’t have been more hospitable.
The capital city as you can see is a modern place, with many services, shops and amenities. This is a world away from the rest of the country, which is hardly developed at all.
Here is the official sign marking the equator, which was in fact not on the equator, at least according to my GPS.
The hospital covers a big site and has a modern section, which now does the medical work. But the original builds have been kept and this one has been turned into a small museum.
The museum was worth the look around and contained many picture of Albert Switzer’s work as well as many of his instruments and personnel possessions.
This is the Riviera of Lambarene, which is on the south side of the island that sits in the middle of the Ogooue river. There are plenty of boats making use of the river as the main transport route. As there are not a lot of roads in the area.
They were certainly pulling some big fish out of the river. The kid in the top left can be seen gutting and cleaning them.
On the way to Ndende the thick forest gave way to open grassland with patches of trees.
I managed to hind amongst the hills for my first nights sleep in the Congo.
This was the view from a nearby hill, which shows the piste in the foreground and goes to show that not all the Congo is thick dense jungle.
I can’t stay away from the sea for long, and to my surprise a good wave as well.
