I had to get up at 04:30 then drive to and climb Dune 45 to get this view. But I think you will agree it was worth it!
Just after the sun had risen, this was the view down the valley.
All the time the sun was rising the colours in the dunes changed.
A snap shot of the past, as these trees have been carbon dated to 900BC. They have survived simply because there is no bugs or moisture to rot them.
These trees are certainly dead but not small.
This is the view of the north eastern end, where the canyon is some 500m deep.
The shapes and colours in the surrounding cliffs made it an impressive view.
Before crossing over into South Africa I spent one last night in Namibia at the border, by the Orange River.
This is the view of the mountain from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront complex.
We had great views all round from the mountain top.
