No matter how well you prepare it is only a matter of time until some thing breaks or wears out on a trip like this. Even if you are very lucky and nothing does break then you will still have to do maintenance to the vehicle, to ensure it works properly and will last and trip. So I comprehensive tool kit is something you have to take.
I am not going to list every tool I have taken, but will say I have taken a full range of sockets, spanners, screw drives, drills, filter wrench, pliers, cutters, metal saw and files etc. I also took along an extra long torque bar, for getting undone stubborn wheel nuts and other things. This I packed into a folding toolbox. Additional to the high lift jack I also have a small mechanical bottle jack. Which is more efficient, than using the high lift, when changing wheels or carrying out work.
As an aid to carrying out repairs and maintenance I also have brought along the Haynes Land Rovers Manual, Land Rover Work Shop Manual and the Defender parts catalogue. These have already proved useful for doing work I have not carried out before on a Land Rover and identifying parts and their numbers when having to buy bits.
As far as spares are concerned I brought quite a lot with me. Again I am not going to list every last one, but will say that I brought a full gasket set for the engine, brake seals, hub seals, wheel bearings, universal joints for the propshafts and anything else that I thought that might wear out, and could prove a real problem if I could not get hold of. I also included many oil filters and fuel filters. As far as the air filter is concerned I decided to use a K&N washable air filter and cleaning kit, but did also bring a spare in case in got damaged.
For the fluids, I keep a small amount of engine oil, ATF fluid (power steering, main gearbox), brake/clutch fluid and 80/90W gear oil (transfer box and diff’s).
